Remembering Cream Drummer Ginger Baker (1939-2019)
Cream co-founder and drummer Ginger Baker passed away at age 80 on October 6, 2019. His official Twitter account made the following announcement, “We are very sad to say that Ginger has passed away peacefully in hospital this morning. Thank you to everyone for your kind words over the past weeks.” Baker had been suffering from several health issues but no official cause of death has yet been disclosed.
Baker, who was born on August 19, 1939, co-founded Cream in 1966 along with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce and went on to influence numerous well-known musicians. Queen guitarist Brian May is among those musicians and paid tribute to the drummer with the Instagram post below.
Baker also played in Blind Faith and Fela Kuti., showcasing his ability to play not only rock ‘n’ roll but also jazz and African drumming. In fact, he once was quoted as saying, “I’d rather play jazz; I hate rock ‘n’ roll.”
